Glass Gathering president Barb Mueller will present a lecture on glass as a sculptural medium. Barb is a professional interior designer and has been working in glass for many years, in multiple techniques.

Field Trip

Field Trip to the Museum of Fine Arts Houston

We have an exciting field trip on April 11 with the Museum of Fine Arts Houston curator Cindi Strauss. She will take us on a private, behind-the-scenes tour of some of the museum’s art in storage. The tour will NOT be at the museum’s public buildings; we will meet at the museum warehouse at 9250 Park South View, Houston, 77051 at 10 am. The tour will last until 11:30 am. We have had the opportunity to have this specially-led tour with Cindi in the past and it is always amazing. Please make an effort to come to this special tour of the MFAH stored treasures! This is a special opportunity for our group, so let’s all plan to attend!

Additional Activity: Empty Bowls Project

Empty Bowls Houston is an annual grassroots event supported by artists, skilled crafters, students, and teachers dedicated to alleviating hunger in the greater Houston area. Since the inception of the event, Empty Bowls Houston has raised $1,200,846 for the Houston Food Bank!  (This equates to more than 3,602,537 meals for the hungry!)

Glass Gathering members have been donating glass bowls for many years to support the cause. After our April tour at MFAH, anyone who can work independently to create a bowl to donate is welcome to return to Harmony Stained Glass to create a project. Bring your own Bullseye glass or purchase what you need. Harmony will donating all firing needed to complete the bowls.

Field Trip

Field Trip to Silver Street Studios!

Glass Gathering members Chris Alexander and Deborah Ellington will be exhibiting new work in a show at Silver Street Studios.  The exhibition Vessels explores the many interpretations of the word “vessel”—as both a container that holds physical matter and as a metaphor for the human experience of holding memories, dreams, and emotions.  Through the medium of glass, Chris and Deborah  investigate how objects become carriers of meaning, feeling, journeying, and remembrance. The show will run from  January 2, 2026 - February 14, 2026.  Opening reception January 8.

Glass Gathering will take a field trip to the show on February 14th in place of our regular meeting. Meet in the West Gallery at Silver Street Studios at 10:00 am, enjoy the show and then browse all the other artists’ studios as well! Lunch locally afterwards for those so inclined.

Field Trip to Houston House of Glass!

Meet Eric DePan and tour his hot glass studio, Houston House of Glass. His team will give a demonstration of making a larger hot glass item, then each member of our group will be able to work hot glass at the blowing station to create a smaller item of your choice. You can choose a flower or ornament sculpture to make. Fee for the hands-on portion of the trip is $50. Eric also has a lovely gift shop with his custom made pieces, so be prepared to spend some....time! We will meet at Eric’s studio (transportation on your own) and those who wish can go to lunch afterwards. Please note: there is plenty of standing room in the studio, but if you prefer to sit please bring your own folding chair.

Presentation: The Science of Glass by Phyllis Friello

Claude Monet once wrote that “Light is the most important person in the picture”. And we know that this is particularly true when that picture is composed of glass. For a better understanding of this essential element that we create with, please join us for an interactive presentation on the basic science of light, color and glass. We will look at the properties of light and color and its behavior in our favorite medium. 

Phyllis is a NASA employee and rocket scientist! Before coming to Houston to live, Phyllis taught physics through art integration at the Baltimore School For The Arts.

We’ll be taking a “field trip” at home! Join us as Harmony's own give us a tour of the glass stacks! Learn about the different companies and what each company has to offer with their cold and fusible glass. See samples of glass by different manufacturers up close in the windows. Learn about the types of glass available to help you select glass for your own projects.

Field Trip to Galveston!

Our own Glass Gathering President, Barb Mueller, is having an exhibition of her work at the Galveston Art League on Post Office Street. We will meet at a restaurant for lunch, then visit Barb's show. Watch the monthly newsletter for the lunch location.

This is also an Art Walk day. The Galveston Art Walk is held the second Saturday of the month. Galleries stay open later, have featured artists, and usually have light refreshments. If anyone wants to stay for Art Walk, the hours for that are 6-9 pm. Transportation is on your own.

Activity: Make a Stained Glass Suncatcher

Join us as Harmony owner Joyce Sullivan teaches how to create a three piece heart suncatcher. She will teach basic cutting skills; both straight and curved lines, how to wrap with copper foil, and how to solder it together. For you fusers, this is your chance to get some cold glass experience! The cost is $35.00 which is a very special price, for members and guests of our group.

Activity: Glass Eye Software Demonstration

Do you want to draw your own glass art projects? Glass Eye 2000 gives you the freedom to design virtually any stained glass window you can imagine, and it can help plan fused and mosaic projects too. It supports your work with a set of custom tools that make drawing, alignments, symmetry, measurement, and resizing easy. Harmony owner Joyce Sullivan will provide a demonstration of the program and answer questions.

Field Trip to Archway Gallery!

Glass Gathering members Chris Alexander and Deborah Ellington will have an exhibition of their work entitled “Reliquaries” at Archway Gallery in Montrose during the month of February.

We will meet at the gallery at 10:30 and those who wish can go to lunch afterwards. If you cannot attend at this time, the opening reception is on February 1st from 5 - 8 pm. The show is up for the month of February, and gallery hours are Tues-Sat 10-6, Sun 1-5  Transportation is on your own.

Demonstration: Christmas Trees with Bling!

Glass Gathering member Mike Walters will give a demonstration on the construction of a stained glass Christmas tree ornament of his own design. This lovely piece incorporates crystals for that added twinkle. Mike will show how to add some bling to a traditionally constructed stained glass project.

It’s never too early to get into the holiday spirit! Come with some ideas for fused glass holiday ornaments and put them together in the company of your Glass Gathering friends. Activity: UFO Sightings!

We all have UFOs - Unfinished Objects and Projects - that we could use some help in getting done. Bring them in this month! Whether you have a problem to be solved or just need some space to work, we plan to help finish the UFOs. Harmony will be offering free shop time after the meeting if you would like to continue working in the company of glass friends.

18th Annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser

Empty Bowls is a grassroots effort by artists and craftspeople in cities and towns across the country to feed the hungry in their communities. Empty Bowls Houston is implemented locally by Houston-area ceramists and artists working in various media, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and the Houston Food Bank.

For a minimum $25 donation, attendees have the pleasure of selecting a bowl from hundreds of one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted bowls donated by Houston area ceramists and craft artists, then receive a simple lunch of soup and bread freshly prepared by the Houston Food Bank. Pottery and woodturning demonstrations and live music will be featured at the event.

The empty bowls serve as a reminder of all the empty bowls in our community and around the world.

Glass Gathering has supported the Empty Bowls fundraiser for many years with donations and participation in the event. For our May meeting, we will attend on a come and go basis. Coordinate with friends and enjoy this amazing event!

Why: Visit to the exhibition “Glass in Flight 1” by Tuscon artist Alex Heveri. The exhibit will include more than twenty-one powder-coated steel, hand-cut and hand-faceted dalle de verre glass and sanded epoxy sculptures.

All participants will travel independently and meet at Houston Botanical Gardens at 10:00 am. Those interested in lunch afterwards are welcome to find a place to continue the field trip with sustenance!

Discussion: Things to Consider When Displaying Your Art

Glass Gathering founder and past president Richard Hinson will give a presentation on…Presentation! Planning and designing the presentation and display of glass artwork can be as critical as the execution of the work itself. Richard will lead a discussion of important things to consider. Richard holds a Master of Fine Arts in photography from University of Houston and worked for the Museum of Fine Arts Houston for many years. He enjoys working in both stained and fused glass. Bring your questions and your projects for discussion!

Activity: Fusing Shop Time For Empty Bowls

Glass Gathering members and guests who would like to can join in donating a piece to the annual Houston Empty Bowls fundraiser in support of the Houston Food Bank. Harmony Stained Glass is donating shop time and firing for these projects after the meeting from 1:00 - 5:00 pm. (Instruction not included; you must know how to create your project). The Empty Bowls event happens on May 11, and GG will be collecting bowls for donation through April.

Why: Our February meeting will be an exciting field trip to Eric DePan's glass blowing studio, Houston House of Glass. Eric is a very accomplished hot glass artist who won First Place in the Hot and Warm Glass category in our September 2023 annual art show. He will be doing a demonstration of various glass blowing techniques, and is also offering an optional hands-on opportunity for attendees to make a blown glass flower. Cost for the hands-on work is $45 (cash only). Seating for the demonstration will be limited to 12-15 people and all others will be standing.

All participants will travel independently and meet at Houston House of Glass at 10:00 am. The studio is located in the East End Maker Hub, Suite Y122.

Directions: coming off the 610 Loop or I45 to TX- 225W will go down Broadway to Navigation  and travel on Navigation about 2 miles, you will exit toward Mack St before the RR bridge. Turn right on Mack St after the RR tracks and TXRX sign into the East End Maker Hub property. You will wind down the street before you will see the building.  Do not park in the front lot.  Drive all the way to the left end of the building and turn right.  You will see parking on the left and a big warehouse and walk-through door in the building on the right.  Come into the building and Houston House of Glass will be on your right.

Presentation: Soldering; Basic and Decorative

Harmony Stained Glass crew members Marianne Huether and David Lantrip will present tips and tricks to help with stained glass soldering. Marianne teaches Harmony’s copper foil classes as well as doing most of the stained glass repairs that come into the shop. David’s specialty is tiffany-style lamps and decorative soldering. Both will offer their experience and knowledge, and take questions for trouble-shooting. Both are technically excellent; bring your questions and your projects for discussion.
